Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition characterized by an improperly functioning sphincter (valve) between the stomach and esophagus, which causes stomach juices to reflux and cause harm to the esophagus. This issue leads to symptoms of heartburn or regurgitation. If left untreated, some cases of GERD have the potential to turn into something more serious, such as esophagitis or esophageal cancer, which is one of the fastest growing cancers in the US. GERD is often misjudged as mere heartburn.
