A colonoscopy is a procedure recommended to everyone over the age of 50, and some should begin having this routine procedure at a younger age if they have symptoms or a family history of colon cancer. The colonoscopy is important to help detect cancer and prevent growths like polyps from developing into cancer.

However, a standard colonoscopy often misses 12 to 24 percent of polyps during the procedure, as the camera device used is limited to only displaying a forward view. But now, a new technology called the Third Eye Retroscope enhances the effectiveness of colonoscopies by providing a backwards view as well, and has proven to detect approximately 13 percent more polyps than the standard colonoscopy. The device is intuitive to use and provides the endoscopist with the most complete view of the surface of the colon. This new procedure does not involve any additional discomfort or recovery time for the patient.

Florida Hospital Celebration Health's Chief of Staff and Gastroenterologist, Dr. Badar Anwer, is on the cutting edge of this new advancement. Today, he performed the first Third Eye Retroscopy procedures in the state of Florida.
