Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men, right behind skin cancer. Each year more than 230,000 men will be told by their doctor that they have prostate cancer. All told, one in six men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.

While no cure for prostate cancer has yet been found, Florida Hospital Celebration Health is working diligently to increase the survival rate through innovative new treatments and procedures.

One of the most promising of these is the robotic prostatectomy, which has consistently demonstrated superior outcomes compared to traditional approaches when it comes to cancer control, incontinence and impotence. Florida Hospital Celebration Health was an earlier adopter of robotics and we have on staff one of the most experienced robotic prostatectomy surgeons in the world who has performed nearly 3,000 such procedures to date.

Dr. Vipul Patel serves as the Medical Director of the Global Robotic Institute. He has personally performed the most robotic prostatectomies in the world and has currently performed over 2,800 procedures. He has utilized his skill and knowledge in this field to train and educate surgeons world wide. He is editor in chief of the Journal of Robotic Surgery and of the first robotic urology textbook. Prior to joining Florida Hospital, Dr. Patel practiced at the Ohio State University where he served as the Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery.

The da Vinci® robots at the Global Robotics Institute allow surgeons here to transfer their surgical skills to a minimally invasive procedure that is extremely precise and is quickly becoming the standard in surgical removal of the prostate. We are proud to say that our robotic surgical teams have traveled the world to teach this state-of-the-art procedure to other surgeons.
