Most medical experts agree that a preventative health routine can help women avoid a lot of the health problems that are specific to them while serving as an early warning system for major health issues.
In most cases, the earlier a condition is detected and diagnosed, the greater the chance you will enjoy a positive outcome.
Following are recommended preventative health regimens for women by age group:
Ages 18 to 39
- An annual checkup every three to five years and even more frequently if you have certain risk factors, symptoms, pre-existing conditions or specific overall health issues.
- Annual blood pressure check.
- Blood glucose test for those who have specific risk factors, including hormonal imbalances.
- Annual pelvic exam for any female over 21 who is not sexually active and any female under 21 who is.
- Pap Test every one to three years, according to your doctor's recommendations. Variables include your sexual history, symptoms, risk factors and pre-existing conditions.
- Any other examinations or tests your doctor recommends based on your unique medical history.
Ages 40 to 49
- A routine checkup every one to three years, including weight and height measurements as well as other tests that address unique health issues.
- Annual blood pressure check.
- Blood glucose test for those who have hormonal imbalances or are obese.
- Thyroid screening once every three to five years. More often if the results are abnormal.
- Mammogram beginning at year 30 and annually thereafter.
- Annual pelvic exam.
- Pap Test every one to three years, depending on your doctor's recommendations.
- Other examinations and tests determined by your overall health and medical history.
Ages 50 to 64
- A checkup every year including measurements of height and weight or more frequently if your overall health and medical history warrant it.
- Annual blood pressure check, more frequent if needed.
- Blood glucose test for those with specific health factors such as hormonal imbalances.
- Annual mammogram or more often if recommended by your doctor.
- Annual pelvic exam.
- Pap Test once every three to five years.
- Any other tests recommended by your doctor.
Ages 65+
- Annual checkup including measurements.
- Annual blood pressure check, more often if needed.
- Blood glucose test if you have certain rick factors.
- Thyroid screening once every three to five years
- Bone density screening.
- Annual mammogram and pelvic exam.
- Pap Test once every three years.
- Any other examinations or test recommended by your physician, or above tests more often if your health issues, overall health or medical history require it.
